Below are some steps you can take to ensure that your Joomla upgrade goes smoothly.
Upgrades and updates should be done during your off-peak hours (your low traffic time).
1: Back Your Site Up
Backups ensure that you have an immediate action plan should something go wrong.
2: Update Joomla
To upgrade Joomla manually, go to your administrative area: http://yourdomain.com/administrator.
Joomla will automatically check for new versions at its official repository. If there is a new version available, you will see a notification in your quick links and click on the Update now! link to proceed.
You will then be redirected to the Joomla update page where you'll see information of your current Joomla version and the latest one you will be upgrading to, the update package URL, and the installation method. You shouldn't make any changes at this point - the default settings should work just fine. Click on the Install the update button.
In few moments, your Joomla website will be upgraded to the latest version and you will be brought to a screen with confirmation for the successful update!
3: Update Joomla Extensions
In most cases updating your components, modules and plugins is an easy task. First, you need to log into your Joomla Administrator dashboard and go to Extensions -> Extension Manager.
Once you load the Extension Manager, click on the Update link in the left column. Next, Joomla will show you a list of all extensions that have a new version.
Place a check next to the plugin name to be updtaed and click the Update button at the top left part of the page.
4: Check Your Site
Take a minute to look over your site and visit a few pages and posts. If something isn’t working properly, it is best to catch it now instead of later.
- Not all Joomla extensions can be updated through the Joomla Extension Manager. This is why it is important to check the official websites of the extensions you're using. If possible, subscribe to their RSS feeds for new versions in order to be informed immediately after a new release is launched. Use instructions provided by the Extension developer to upgrade if updating through Joomla Administrator dashboard isn't an option.
- There are older Joomla major versions like Joomla 1.0 or Joomla 1.5 that are no longer supported. All users are strongly encouraged to move any existing Joomla 1 installs to the current version of Joomla as soon as possible. Also, once a Joomla branch reaches its *.5 release it will become the recommended version for all existing Joomla websites move to the new branch too. However, moving from one Joomla major version to another is not a one click experience and may require more efforts especially for more complex websites.
