Disadvantages of Website Builders

May 3, 2013

When deciding to build a website for business, one of the key decisions you will have to make is how you actually go about the process.

As with most things in life, there are no shortcuts to success, and websites that offer services to build your own website (e.g. Wix, Weebly, etc.) at minimal cost are no exception.

Although on the surface they might seem and look great, for business purposes at least, they are not suitable at all. There are a variety of reasons why this may be the case.

Flexibility...

With Website Builders, you are restricted in terms of what you can have actually have on your site, as well as the level of customization you can realistically achieve. A craftsman is only as good as his tools, and if the very tools you’re building the foundation of your online presence are not very flexible, it is unlikely that you’ll have a great site to match your individual needs.

Vendor Lock-In...

Not only that, you’re be susceptible to vendor lock-in. The online world is a fast moving place, and website designs are getting increasingly more sophisticated at time goes by. This will also be reflected in the exponential increase of "must-have" propriety add-ons and extensions you’ll be coerced into buying, once you sign up with the website builders. This is in complete contrast to our inherent flexibility and active support of the open source community.

Restrictions...

But most important of all, you won’t have access to the source code - the very foundation of your online presence. This is now vitally important if you are ever thinking about search engine optimization or other online marketing strategies.

Your business website is your shop window, if you ever plan on harnessing the full power of internet-based marketing, you simply won’t be able to do so. But your competitors certainly will. This all becomes very restrictive and that can’t be great for increasing your client base and market share.

These are just some of the reasons why a "one size fits all" website builder approach may not be suitable for your business. They are inflexible, they tie you in to a specific vendor, and they may even be holding you back - while at the same time giving your competitors the edge.
